Our conservation efforts are achieved through the implementation of conservation easements, which are voluntary, legally-binding agreements between a landowner and a land trust or government agency that permanently limits uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values. Landowners retain many of their rights, including the right to own and use the land, sell it, and pass it on to their heirs. These investments strengthen our rural economy, protect wildlife habitat, provide public access to forestland, trails and water, and restore our historic community buildings, creating jobs and bringing visitors to Vermont.
We protect ecologically valuable land and promote a healthy environment through investments that enrich biodiversity, maintain clean air and water, promote flood resilience and preserve natural landscapes. This helps manage the effects of climate change while maintaining the state’s rural character and quality of life that are cherished by Vermont residents and visitors.
